No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”  Mark 2:21-22 

“This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”  Luke 22:20 

Contract vs. Covenant

Similarity:

  • Binding agreement between two people/ groups that includes responsibilities and expectations. 

Differences:

  • Law-based vs. grace-based
  • Suspicion and fear vs. love and trust
  • Little relationship vs. Much relationship
  • You owe me vs. I owe them
  • Entitlement vs. Generous
  • Their responsibilities vs. my responsibilities
  • Limit losses vs. Counts gains
  • Legal recourse vs. reconciliation
  • Fair exchange vs. commitment
  • Boundaries of separation vs. transferring ownership
  • Equals vs. Great to Lesser
